Language Policy

Horizon International School is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for students of all linguistic backgrounds.

The school recognizes that English proficiency is essential for academic success and social integration.

New students who meet any of the following criteria are identified as ELLs:

  • Their first language is not English.
  • They speak a variety of English that is different from the instructional language.
  • They require additional language support to access grade-level academic content.

All new students undergo a language assessment to determine their English proficiency level.

Screening Procedures

  • Step 1: Initial WIDA MODEL Assessment
    • All non-native English speakers take the WIDA MODEL to determine their proficiency level.
    • The test assesses listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

  • Step 2: Placement Decision
    • Students scoring below WIDA 3.5 composite or below 3.0 in any domain will receive ESL support.
    • Students scoring 3.5 or above will enter mainstream classes but may receive transitional support.
