The ESL core classes take place Monday through Friday from 9:30 am until 12:40 pm. English language skills are strategically integrated so that students acquire and apply their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and knowledge in different social and academic contexts. Some of the relevant activities and exercises include: pair work, discussions, photo stories, conversation models, pronunciation, reading comprehension, grammar and listening practice.
Additionally, each unit is complemented with funny TV-style sitcoms and activity worksheets that provide additional listening and language practice.
A weekly curriculum guide is made available and proposes the content and material that should be covered on specific dates and times. Still, teachers have the freedom to incorporate their own material as long as it is engaging and relevant to the topic. Teachers use the Teacher’s Edition which provides detailed notes for planning and presenting the selected material in the weekly curriculum guides. The teacher’s edition also contains answers to the exercises and ideas for extending the lessons.
Homework: Teachers must assign and check homework every day. The workbook contains lesson-by-lesson written exercises to accompany the student’s book. The curriculum guide specifies which exercises are to be assigned. Reviewing homework should take between 20-30 minutes and total student participation should be encouraged. Teachers may also create their own homework assignments or “challenges” and reward students using the Incentive Plan (see below).
Incentive Plan: Students are rewarded with incentive plan throughout the program. As indicated in the weekly curriculum guide, teachers must create “challenges” that may consist of games, oral quizzes, or any activity in which a student(s) is tested on the material learned or existing knowledge.
Enrichment Core: Afternoon Session The Enrichment Core takes place Monday through Thursday from 2:00 pm until 4:15 pm. These classes are created to reinforce more specific areas and complement the content studied in the ESL Core classes. Similarly, details on class assignment, content and material are made available in a weekly guide/schedule. The following are some of the classes:
Vocabulary Expansion
Reading Comprehension
Conversation & Discussion Practice
Idioms
Pronunciation Practice
TOEFL Preparation*
Also, material is provided for all afternoon sessions except Wednesdays, which are reserved for teachers to implement their own lessons or activities. Teachers should e-mail their head teacher or coordinator before every Wednesday and provide details on the prospective lesson or activity. Since there are two periods of 45 minutes in the afternoon, teachers may plan and implement one 90-minute activity or two different/related activities of 45 minutes each. Again, activities may be games, ice-breakers, outdoor energizers, contests, plays, scavenger hunts, etc. As long as they are engaging, appropriate and fun, anything is valid.
Textbooks & Materials:
The textbooks and lesson content for the ESL Core sessions were designed for international communication that sets a new standard using the natural language that people really speak. These books contain authentic English that is commonly used in social and academic contexts. The reading passages come from a variety of sources, including brochures, newspapers, guidebooks, websites, surveys, advertisements, and other sources that students encounter in real life. In class, students use these passages in a meaningful and practical way while practicing newly learned grammar and vocabulary. The listening and speaking portion of the book includes conversations that mimic real life communication, allowing students to hear and practice conversational strategies they are likely to encounter outside of school. The writing exercises in the textbook and the accompanying workbook range from filling out forms to writing paragraphs and short compositions. Each Top Notch and Summit textbook is accompanied by a CD for listening exercises and a workbook for vocabulary, grammar, and writing exercises.
Most materials and worksheets for the Enrichment Core are carefully selected to complement and expand the content taught during the ESL core sessions. These include: vocabulary-building strategies, extra readings, games, teacher-created activities, pronunciation and speaking practice.
